I am new to sewing but enjoying it immensely - sewing for my daughter (2) and I'm expecting my second so bibs and burp cloths are definitely on my list of future projects. :) I haven't done a lot yet because I don't know whether its a boy or girl but as soon as I do I will be ordering fabric and getting started. :) Off to check out your other tutorials now!

ReplyDeleteHi Vanessa - I saw your video on youtube (huge congrats on being a NextUp winner by the way) and had two questions for you:
ReplyDelete1- Are you using a standard general purpose foot or is a walking foot necessary for using two layers of flannel?
2- It seems like you snip just the inside curves.. are notches on outer curves not necessary?

Hi Jen! I did use the standard foot on the machine. For just a few layers you can usually get away with it. Check to see if your machine has a presser foot tension setting and you can loosen that a bit so the foot doesn't "step on" the fabric so hard so it can flow through smoother. Usually you should clip notches into the outer curves but I found that using the 1/4" seam that I used and flannel (which has some stretch to it) you don't have to if you flip it out nicely and press in place. Hope this helps!! Congrats on starting to sew! :o)

ReplyDeletehey loved the tutorial, I did have a questions, once you put the little slits around the neck and turned the bib inside out did you just stitch over them? I am a beginner hope i didnt miss something
ReplyDeleteTahirah: Yes. That's not a problem because it's inside the bib and you won't see it. The reason we make the slits is so the fabric has some give and allows you to turn it out around all the curves.
ReplyDeleteI am very new to sewing (Like, 2 months new!) and your tutorials get me SOOO excited to sew! I have an Etsy shop that I am pretty much always knitting and crocheting for so I haven't had much time to truly make anything yet but I get sufficiently distracted from working on orders just dreaming of the stuff I will be making in my free time... I spent an hour laying in bed this morning watching your tutorials! I work at a Jo-ann fabric and craft store so I am seriously going to have to resist buying fabric tonight at work :]

I just read your Pellon bio and interview and it is so amazing what you have accomplished. I started my Etsy shop pretty soon after I learned to knit and crochet and your personal success story has really opened my eyes to where I could go with my craft if I put in the effort.

DeleteRegarding your pattern template, does the one you have for free download at that link end up being the proper size? I feel like yours in the video is bigger than the one we are able to download. It looks like yours is about 11-ish inches tall on your cutting mat and mine is like 7 and a half inches tall when I cut it out. I don't think that there is anything different I could being doing to print it out, especially through that website you have it on. If it is supposed to be almost as big as a full sheet of paper, I believe it sized down when you scanned it :/
ReplyDeleteI think it has to do with when you try to print it. Make sure you check the print settings and don't check the box that says "Fit to page".... that will shrink it. If you leave it as is it will print the way I designed it to. Let me know if that works. Thanks!
DeleteHmm.. I don't have any page scaling options selected or boxes checked. I messed around with both the pdf version and the document version and I really can't see any way of making it print bigger... or even show up bigger to give me hope that it is possible. My boyfriend just did some creative copy and paste on paint to make it bigger and that version was 9 1/2 inches tall. I'll make that work or find another bib pattern to work with. I don't have kids (or a bib) or I would just be able to trace one!

ReplyDeleteI use both... you can use a variety of different fabrics aside from cottons, too.
