Sewing Machine Dust Cover

With my new studio coming together nicely I decided to get a little ahead of myself and started making some decor items for my studio. I thought you might like to make one as well so I turned it into a video tutorial- How to make a sewing machine cover.

It's a quick and easy project that uses fabric, Pellon fusible fleece (or batting... or felt...) and some thread. That's it!  I'll show you how to make the side block panels which are a lot easier than you may think!

You can embellish your cover any way you want... applique, free motion quilting... or carve out a whole at the top for the handle... or even include a pocket to carry your foot pedal in. The possibilities are really endless and I hope you'll give it a try.

If you do make one remember to upload your pictures to my Facebook page. I just love seeing all your creations!

  1. Nicely done, Vanessa! I´m just looking at my machine, covered in her ugly plastic cover, that came with the machine years ago. Thanks for the tutorial, maybe I finally will make one now :)

  2. Hola Vanessa, just I started making the cover, but then I noticed I didn't have that batting. The only one I had is the one that needs cover both sides with fabric... I have tons of felt. The fabric I am using for the main body is wool. Why it needs batting? Is it for more body ? Could I forget the batting or use another? Gracias!!!

    1. The batting is just to add some body to it. You could use felt for the same purpose or if the wool is thock enough you could probably do without a second layer. It's just a matter of preference. Have fun!

    4. OMG How fun are you! This is the first time I have ever seen you and I think you are just wonderful. I have been sewing since I was a young girl and have always loved it. I was looking for a site to recommend to a younger woman who wants to learn about sewing. I came across your tutorials and love them. When you said to put pretty sides together I almost feel out of my chair laughing. Just never heard it put that way and you are right...you make this so easy for those wanting to learn to sew. Thanks so much.

    5. Thanks so much! Yes, I always say pretty sides and ugly sides when referring to fabric. I always find it helps my beginner students understand it a little better and makes it less confusing. Glad you found me! Happy sewing!
